Given the importance that the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) attaches to broadening the influence of Québec artists abroad and the special relations that the Québec government maintains with the Federal Republic of Germany, the opening of a Québec studio in Berlin in 2003 marked a major step in the consolidation of the network of studio-apartments made available to Québec artists around the world.

The International Studio Programme of the Künstlerhaus Bethanien (KB) is a platform for up-and-coming artists. The artists-in-residence are given the opportunity to develop and implement a project over a fixed period of time and to consolidate their position in the Berlin art scene.

Artistic fields
Digital arts, visual arts, cinema and video. In 2016, in particular, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien invites artists whose artistic approach centres on photography to submit their projects.

Target applicants
Artists with over 10 years of artistic practice.

The KB is currently housed in a former factory building, the Lichtfabrik, located in the heart of the lively neighborhood connecting the Kreuzberg and Neukölln districts. The public entrance and windowed galleries are facing Kottbusser Strasse.

The KB offers a wide range of services: curatorial support in the implementation of the artists' projects, workshops, technical infrastructure and qualified personnel, exhibiting and advertising the resident artists' projects, holding at least two annual "Open Studio" events and publishing documents related to the projects presented at the KB.

Furthermore, the KB invites the artists to take part in larger projects by liaising them with other institutions. It also establishes contacts with international curators, critics, theorists, gallery owners and collectors, hosts seminars, talks and readings.

The roughly 75-m2 studio is a spacious, bright loft equipped with a small kitchen unit, a sink and wireless Internet connection. All studios are equipped with a bed, shelves, tables and chairs. Bathrooms, showers, washing-machines and dryers are available as shared amenities.

Well-equipped workshops for wood, metal and plastic as well as video and sound editing resources are provided as well as a lounge, fitted with a computer, a printer and a scanner. Fax and copy facilities situated in the office can be used for a small fee during office hours.

Length of stay and amount of the grant
During his stay, the artist will be able to work on the project indicated in the grant application and present it to the public at the Künstlerhaus. The Künstlerhaus offers guest artists living in the residences it manages:

  • the use of workshops and technical equipment needed to carry out artistic projects;
  • the assistance of its technical team in realizing artistic projects;
  • the public presentation of projects carried out during the artist's stay;
  • the promotion of events concerning guest artists;
  • the integration of resident artists into broader projects carried out by the Künstlerhaus.

The twelve-month stay will be from January to December 2017.

Under this program, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec provides a $26 000  grant. It covers the artist's personal insurance and his travel and living expenses.

The CALQ will directly pay the Künstlerhaus Bethanien funds to cover the purchase of material needed to carry out the project, the cost of technical assistance, the preparation and holding of an exhibition, and coverage of the work in the Künstlerhaus Bethanien biannual magazine.

Registration deadline
April 1, 2016
