The Ernest-Cormier studio
Purpose
of the studio
The
Cormier studio is available to French artists in conjunction with
the "Les Inclassables" exchange program between the Conseil des arts et des lettres du
Québec, the Office franco-québécois
pour la jeunesse and CULTURESFRANCE.
Location
Saint-Urbain
Street, in the heart of Montréal, Québec
Layout
The
67-m2 main portion of the studio is two storeys high, which allows
for the production of very large works. A kitchen, dinette
overlooking the studio and bathroom are located on the mezzanine.
The second floor includes a living room, bedroom, library and a room
that can be used as a darkroom (unequipped). The studio occupies the
entire ground floor.

Specialized
equipment
The
studio does not have any specialized equipment, but the Conseil des
arts et des lettres du Québec encourages contact with Québec
professional organizations to make available specific equipment,
e.g. video, sound, new technologies, and so on.
Additional
information
The
Cormier studio is a rare example of an artist's studio in Québec.
It is unusual in that it reflects the fanciful inspiration of the
artist who creates for his own pleasure and the seriousness of his
formal research, adapted to an intimate space. The studio was
designed and built by Québec engineer-architect Ernest Cormier, who
used it as a studio to produce artistic works, a meeting place with
friends and a temporary residence. Acquired in 1941 by the Québec
government, it was used as a sculpture studio by students of the École
des Beaux-Arts de Montréal. It was restored to its original state
in 1986.
