Longstanding ties of friendship link Québec and Mexico. To enable Québec artists to broaden their knowledge of Mexico's culture and artistic diversity, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) concluded in 2000 a cooperation agreement with the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) to establish an exchange program for artists and writers.

Through this rewarding collaboration, more than 20 Mexican and Québec artists have lived abroad.

The agreement covers many artistic fields and enables four artists to take advantage of the vitality of the mexican culture each year.

Artistic fields
Literature, the media arts, the multidisciplinary arts, contemporary music, theatre and the visual arts

Target applicants
Artists and writers with at least two years of artistic practice.

To ensure a better analysis of the artistic proposal, applicants are strongly advised to append to the form a summary several paragraphs long of the project in Spanish.

Location
Depending on the grant recipient’s discipline, work space may be made available by Mexican professional organizations responsible for overseeing the stay, e.g. at the Centro Nacional de las Artes for the visual arts, the media arts and the multidisciplinary arts.

In the realm of literature, contact will be established with the Fundación de las Letras Mexicanas.

Contemporary music composers may be accommodated at the Centro Mexicano para la Música y las Artes Sonoras (CMMAS) located in the city of Morelia in the state of Michoacán.

In exchange, the CALQ hosts each year four Mexican artists, each for a four-month stay. Depending on their artistic discipline, the artists are sponsored during their stay by La Chambre blanche in Québec City, the Centre de production DAÏMÕN or the Union des écrivaines et des écrivains québécois.

Length of stay and amount of the grant
The grant recipient will undertake the four-month stay between January and September 2013, depending on his availability and that of the host facility.

The grant is in the amount of
$8 000.

FONCA coordinates the program and assumes the cost of housing.

It should be noted that it is desirable for participants in this exchange to have a basic knowledge of Spanish.
