1) Which organizations may apply for grants ?
The CALQ's grant program is intended for arts organizations devoted to theatre, music, dance, the multidisciplinary arts, the circus arts, the visual arts, the media arts, popular song and literature. The organizations must be non-profit corporations whose headquarters are located in Québec. Moreover, the majority of directors must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants residing in Québec.

Professional artists and artists' groups are also eligible for some grant programs intended for arts organizations.

2) What is a non-profit organization ?
A non-profit organization is a corporation or an association which is constituted by letters patent granted, in Québec, by the Inspector General of Financial Institutions to any number of persons, not less than three, for objects of a national, patriotic, religious, philanthropic, charitable, scientific, artistic, social, professional, athletic or sporting character, or the like, but without pecuniary gain (Companies Act, R.S.Q., chapter C-38).

A non-profit organization must have a board of directors made up of at least three members.

3) When may a grant application be submitted ?
Registration deadlines vary depending on the programs and sections. Consult the calendar of registration deadlines (in french only).

4) What portion of the financing of organizations does the CALQ assume ?
The grant may cover part or all of the organization's operations. The CALQ's financial assistance may not exceed 75% of the cost of a project. In the case of financial assistance granted in respect of an organization's operations, the CALQ's contribution may not, generally speaking, exceed 50% of a performing arts organization's annual budget, or 75% of a cultural magazine, or a visual arts or media arts organization's operations. In the case of financial assistance granted in respect of special projects, such as touring, the CALQ's contribution covers eligible expenses as stated in the programs.

5) Does the CALQ make public the names of subsidized organizations ?
You can consult the list of organizations that have received funding from the CALQ. (in French only)

6) May organizations simultaneously apply for financial assistance to the CALQ des arts et des lettres du Québec and to other funding bodies ?
The grant awarded by the CALQ to an organization must complement other sources of revenue. When an organization knows the amount of grants it is receiving from the CALQ and other public agencies, it must draw up a revised, balanced budget and submit it to the CALQ.

7) How long does it take the CALQ to respond to a grant application ?
If the application is complete, the CALQ will inform the applicant of its decision following the evaluation of the application within roughly five months of the registration date in the case of an operating grant application, and four months in the case of an application for a project support grant.

8) How are advisory committees set up ?
Advisory committees are made up of individuals recognized for their competence in the field who have a thorough knowledge of the organizations and their impact on the arts community.

The composition of an advisory committee must comply with the following criteria:

  • it must be made up of three to five members;
  • members are artists, writers or cultural managers recognized in their fields;
  • advisory committees are made up of men and women chosen in a way that reflects the diversity of artistic practice, territorial representativeness and the ethnocultural diversity of Québec's population.

More information may be found in the Peer Evaluation Information Guide.

9) Does the CALQ announce the names of the members of advisory committees ?
The CALQ makes available the names of advisory committee and selection committee members three months after the conclusion of their mandates.
