Between reality and fiction, between truth and lies, between true and false, Sophie Deraspe maps out her cinematographic world by tracing new boundaries, blurring genres, cultivating ambiguity, and confounding certainty. If nothing is closer to truth than lies, as Einstein said, the director, screenwriter, and director of photography looks at the slip side as well.

From the appalling impostures that she documents to the realities she elaborately transcends in her stories, roles she intermingles between actors and non-actors with her deconstructions of false identities: there is no doubt the director evokes life, beyond what is true or untrue.

Missing Victor Pellerin, Vital Signs, Les loups, A Gay Girl in Damascus: The Amina ProfileAntigone : blazing with truth, Sophie Deraspe’s films always astonish and disturb. And although they are critically acclaimed, applauded at the most prominent festivals, and honoured at the most prestigious galas around the world, their director maintains a grounded vision of her art.

Her films are like boats drifting gently on the waves in search of their destination, and she captures the closest angles of the landscapes she observes on the horizon and brings an infinitely personal touch to each film. Her window onto the world.

Inspired by the idea of a reality beyond than we can imagine, through her windows onto an imperfect world, Sophie Deraspe brings finesse to her art, like a tranquil, righteous force, whose inner flame has invigorated Québec film and boldly pushed back its limits.
