Foreword
The Fondation Christoph Merian in Basel, in the Swiss German region, created the International Studio and Exchange Program in the Basel Region (IAAB) in the 1980s. Studios and studio-apartments were constructed in the St. Alban Tal quarter of Basel and collaborations were launched with various international institutions. Since then, the program has grown with new partners in Freiburg and Mulhouse, France. From 1987 on, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (Conseil) has collaborated with the Fondation for its international artist and studio and studio-apartment residency exchange program.
In November 2014, the former IAAB was transformed into Atelier Mondial - International Arts Exchange Program Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (Atelier Mondial). The new studio and artist residency building is located just behind the SBB railway station on Freilager-Platz in the Dreispitz district, where galleries and alternative spaces abound.
Under this collaboration, a Québec artist can engage in a four-month sojourn in Basel, Switzerland and take advantage of the numerous possibilities offered to make professional contacts and further career development.
Objectives
Conseil's studio-apartment residency program has five objectives:
- To support and stimulate artists by making available to them a suitable environment and the means to produce and disseminate their works.
- To foster artistic renewal for artists and writers by giving them access to a new and stimulating cultural environment.
- To facilitate exchanges of artistic or literary viewpoints and contribute to the formation of durable ties between artists from Québec and abroad.
- To promote the work and career development of Québec artists internationally.
- To develop new networks for artistic creation, production and dissemination.
