    Foreword

Seeking to participate directly in the initiative undertaken by the Québec government to develop enduring exchanges in arts and culture with Asian countries, in 2015 the Conseil des Arts et des lettres (Conseil) entered into a three-year partnership agreement with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Seoul, South Korea, aimed at setting up an artist and studio-apartment residency exchanges between Quebec and South Korea.

In the context of this exchange, a Québec visual artist can reside for a three-month sojourn in Seoul at the MMCA’s Goyang residence. In return, a South Korean visual artist will be hosted in Montréal, Québec at the Darling Foundry.

    Objectives

Conseil’s studio-apartment residency program has five objectives:

    • To support and stimulate artists by making available to them a suitable environment and the means to produce and disseminate their works.
    • To foster artistic renewal for artists and writers by giving them access to a new and stimulating cultural environment.
    • To facilitate exchanges of artistic or literary viewpoints and contribute to the formation of durable ties between artists from Québec and abroad.
    • To promote the work and career development of Québec artists internationally.
    • To develop new networks for artistic creation, production and dissemination.

    Location

Since it was established in 1969, the MMCA has long served as a national art museum accomodating both the modern and contemporary art of Korea. Through the close coordination and cooperation of its four branches – Gwacheon (1986), Deoksugung (1998), Seoul (2013) and Cheongju (2018, TBD)-MMCA is dedicated to presenting exceptional artworks to the public as a source of positive change and a respite frpm the hustle of day life. MMCA Gwacheon is devoted to various genres of visual art, including architecture, design and craft, while MMCA Deoksugung showcases modern art from Korea and overseas and MMCA Seoul focuses on introducing global contemporary art. Not only playing the traditional role of art museum, MMCA implements various roles such as collecting, preserving, researching, exhibiting, providing educational services and hosting of artists in residence.

In 2002, the MMCA inaugurated its artist-in-residence program to host national and international artists with the opening of two creative residency facilities, the Changdong Residency and the Goyang Residency.

The MMCA, for its part, will offer the Québec artist free use of a studio-apartment as well as work spaces. The residence complex offered to the Conseil is the Goyang Residency. This 2500m2 complex includes 18 studio-residences varying from 61m2 to 66m2, studio workshops including a wood and metal workshop, exhibition space, communal area and collective kitchen, guest rooms, walled garden and terrace.

MMCA organizes Open Studio days, meetings with curators, gallery directors and representatives of other Korean museums as well as cultural mediation activities.

Since 2005, the MMCA has forged cooperation agreements with, in particular, Australia, Germany, France, New Zealand, Japan and Taiwan for the implementation of artists’ and studio-apartment residency exchanges.

An applicant registered for Mon Dossier CALQ will receive an email inviting him to consult his online file to find out the result.

If the application is successful, along with the announcement letter the applicant will receive a document describing the terms and conditions governing the use of the grant.
