Foreword
Seeking to participate in the Québec government’s initiative to broaden the presence of Québec artists in internationally renowned and stimulating artistic milieus, the Conseil des Arts et des lettres (Conseil) has concluded in 2016 a partnership agreement with le Lieu unique, scène nationale de Nantes (Lieu Unique) and la Ville de Nantes, aimed at setting up an artist and studio-apartment residency exchanges between Quebec and France.
In the context of this exchange, a Québec visual artist can reside for a two-month sojourn at Lieu Unique, in Nantes. In return, a French visual artist will be hosted in Québec for a two-month sojourn.
A studio-apartment and work space will be made available to the artist by le Lieu unique and la Ville de Nantes.
Objectives
Conseil's studio-apartment residency program has five objectives:
- To support and stimulate artists by making available to them a suitable environment and the means to produce and disseminate their works.
- To foster artistic renewal for artists and writers by giving them access to a new and stimulating cultural environment.
- To facilitate exchanges of artistic or literary viewpoints and contribute to the formation of durable ties between artists from Québec and abroad.
- To promote the work and career development of Québec artists internationally.
- To develop new networks for artistic creation, production and dissemination.

Length of stay and amount of the grant
The residency will run for two months in the fall. The exact duration is to be confirmed with Le Lieu Unique.

Location
The Lieu Unique is a vibrant cultural facility dedicated to the visual arts, theatre, dance, circus arts, music and literature, as well as philosophy, architecture and the humanities. Located in close proximity to the railway station and downtown Nantes, the former Lieu Unique factory has taken on a new vocation since January 1,2000, becoming a dynamic and unconventional arts centre, an alternative space interweaving areas for the arts and social engagement. At Lieu Unique, spaces dedicated to creation and presentation coexist with others open to the public: a bar, restaurant, bookstore, Hammam and daycare.
Every year, the Lieu Unique offers more than forty programs featuring theatre, dance, circus arts, concerts, literary events and philosophical debates, more than 200 days of exhibitions and artists’ residencies and a Labo Utile open to all (literature, architecture, music, philosophy), attracting 550,000 visits and over 100,000 spectators for the artistic activities.
A studio-apartment and work space will be made available to the artist by le Lieu unique. The work space is located in the Atelier du silo and is not furnished with any specialized equipment.
Professional support for the residency sojourn is assured by the management and technical team at the Lieu Unique, which will provide assistance and logistical support to the invited artist for the duration of the residency.
This residence is not wheelchair accessible.
