Eudore Belzile - Compagnon des arts et des lettres du Québec
“On est d’en haut ou bien d’en bas,” Gilles Vigneault sang in Les Voyageurs, referring to whether you are from the Upper or Lower St. Lawrence. Eudore Belzile is staunchly from the lower. That’s where he pushed – and pushed hard – to bring change, to create, and to develop.
Eudore Belzile cofounded the Théâtre du Bic, combining his love of performance arts and his mastery of System D with a keen sense of community. Through this act of regional affirmation, the actor, director, educator, and artistic director created a popular theatre with contemporary echoes, which attracted audiences from across generations. In the intimate room, the people from the Lower St. Lawrence felt at home and saw themselves on the stage for the first time. The Lower St. Lawrence was feeling into its culture.
Eudore Belzile has been democratizing art for over 40 years with unwavering conviction. He developed programming that attracted excellent Québec and foreign companies to a part of the country that became a springboard. Rimouski has become a hub for producing and presenting creative theatre, contemporary dance, and storytelling shows in eastern Québec.
With the impetus provided by Eudore Belzile, the Lower St. Lawrence cultural community has grown richer from an invaluable heritage. In keeping with his commitment, he has no plans to retire until he has overseen the modernization of what he brought into the world and prepared the succession to ensure that people from the Lower St. Lawrence keep flying high.
