9 October 2018 Jana Sterbak, Compagne des arts et des lettres du Québec
Featured twice at the Venice Biennale (1990 and 2003), Jana Sterbak made her name on the international artistic scene thanks to her sculptures, installations, photographs, videos and performances.

Mixing humour and intelligence, the Czech-born, Montréal-based artist uses non-traditional materials (meat, ice, sweat, hair, chocolate, etc.) to create forceful works dealing with the human body, identity, liberty, ephemerality, the absurdities of life and the contradictions of society. She recently won the Paul-Émile-Borduas award.

Jana Sterbak was unable to attend the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec special awards ceremony on May 28, 2018. She has received her insignia on October 9, 2018, at the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, at the unveiling of her work Planetarium. Read the tribute here (in French).

The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec would like to thank the Caisse de la Culture and Le Devoir, which partnered for the award of this honour.
