Foreword
The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ), in partnership with Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst (Bavarian State Ministry for Science and the Arts), offers a two-month residency for a writer or comic book author from Québec.
The residency takes place at Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa ConcordiaThis link will open in a new window, an international house of artists founded by the Free State of Bavaria to promote the arts and enrich the cultural life of Bamberg and the region. Housed in a former baroque palace on the banks of the Regnitz River, in the heart of Bamberg’s UNESCO World Heritage historic center, the Villa welcomes each year a small group of artists from different disciplines and countries.
Ideally situated in northern Bavaria, Bamberg combines the charm of a historic city with convenient connections to major cultural centers such as Nuremberg, Munich, and Frankfurt. This setting offers residents a calm yet stimulating environment that encourages focus, reflection, and interdisciplinary dialogue. Throughout the year, the Villa hosts cultural events open to the public, fostering exchanges between invited artists and the local community.
This program is designed to give artists dedicated time to advance their project, allowing them to fully focus on their research and artistic activities. It also supports their professional development by offering opportunities for meetings, networking, and exposure to other artistic practices, within a stimulating environment that fosters exchange with an international artistic community.
In return, an artist from Bavaria will be hosted at the Maison de la littérature in QuébecThis link will open in a new window, thereby strengthening ties between the literary and comic arts communities of Québec and Bavaria.
Objectives

Location
Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia is an international artists’ house founded by the Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst (Bavarian State Ministry for Science and the Arts) to promote the arts and enrich the cultural life of Bamberg and its region.
The name Concordia stands for harmony — between arts, cultures, and people. Rising majestically on the banks of the Regnitz, the Villa blends harmoniously into Bamberg’s historic cityscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its waterside location and small garden create a calm and meditative atmosphere that invites focus and contemplation.
Each year, the institution hosts a select group of international artists working in the fields of visual arts, literature, and music. A Villa Concordia fellowship offers them a protected time for work, free from daily distractions, in a structured and inspiring environment that encourages research, reflection, and interdisciplinary exchange.
Throughout the year, the Villa also organizes cultural events — exhibitions, readings, concerts, and talks — open to the public, fostering interaction between guest artists and the local community and enriching the cultural life of the region. As part of the international residency, the institution commits to presenting the Québec artist to its audience and providing translation (French/English–German) for the event.
