The CALQ and the Société du Parc olympique issue a call for projects for eco-friendly public art

Développement durable Partenariat

The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) and the Société du Parc olympique are issuing a call for projects to create two permanent public artworks to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Olympic Games in Montréal.

The artworks, designed for the high-volume areas of the Espace Vert Viau and Sentier Morgan at Montréal’s Olympic Park, will highlight the historical, social, and architectural significance of the 1976 Games. This call for projects is part of a broader initiative to enhance the iconic Olympic Park as a vibrant, accessible, and inclusive civic space, where public art enriches the visitor experience and sparks community reflection.

The two artworks selected will ultimately be part of a series of sculptures made from repurposed materials from the dismantled roof of the Olympic Stadium This link will open in a new window, which will form the Écoart art walk in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.

“Art is a powerful way to reconnect the public with their surroundings. I am delighted by this partnership between our institutions; it truly embodies the idea that art serves a purpose . This call for projects aligns with the CALQ’s vision: to make art accessible to as many people as possible by embedding it in vibrant, inclusive public spaces, while fostering sustainable eco-design practices.”
- Véronique Fontaine, President and Executive Director of the CALQ

“On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Olympic Games, the Olympic Park is preparing to write a new chapter in its story. The creation of these two public artworks is part of a broader drive for transformation that preserves and celebrates the historical, architectural, urban, and symbolic patrimonial legacy of this major urban park. By repurposing iconic materials from the Olympic Stadium roof, we invite artists to take a creative, eco-friendly, and sustainable look at our shared heritage, to keep memory alive at the heart of a modern Olympic District.”
- Joëlle Brodeur, présidente-directrice générale du Parc olympique

Submitting a project

The CALQ invites professional artists in the visual arts and arts and craft with at least five years of practice and some experience in public art to submit their proposal by September 30, 2025.

The projects proposed as part of this call must be meaningful, blend harmoniously with the site’s natural surroundings, and be created sustainably, both in the choice of materials and in the production process.

The artworks submitted as part of this call must include a minimum of 60% recycled materials reclaimed from the roof of Montréal’s Olympic Stadium. Candidates who propose a project will have the chance to visit the Olympic Park’s storage site to familiarize themselves with the reusable materials from the Stadium roof before submitting their project.

Download the technical data sheet for the materials (957 KB)

A lump sum of $4,000 will be awarded to each of the finalist proposals to allow artists to develop their project and create a model before the selection committee makes its final choice.

A maximum of $200,000 will be allocated to each selected proposal to cover the costs of design, creation, and installation of the work, as well as the artist’s fee.

The artworks must be completed and installed in time for unveiling the week of September 1, 2026, as part of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Montréal Olympic Games.
