The CALQ launches a residency in arts and artificial intelligence
The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) announces a new exchange residency program for Québec artists who would like to explore creative practices that integrate artificial intelligence from artistic, critical and experimental perspectives.
This leading-edge residency, open to artists in all disciplines, will take place over two distinct four-week periods:
- The first phase is dedicated to producing the artwork at Sporobole (Sherbrooke), a Québec-based artist centre focused on research, creation and dissemination in a digital context.
- The second phase is dedicated to the international presentation of the artwork and to expanding the artist’s professional network at the Biennale des Imaginaires Numériques (Marseille), a flagship event in digital creation and a major platform for dissemination in Europe.
In exchange, a French artist will be hosted at Mois Multi (Québec City), with the support of Recto-Verso, for a creative and presentation residency to explore the vibrancy of Québec’s digital and interdisciplinary arts scene.
This unique residency program will enable artists to create using emerging technologies, while receiving advanced technological and artistic support. This is the first residency created by the CALQ that offers Québec artists the opportunity to fully explore the creative potential of artificial intelligence, foster cross-disciplinary exchanges and ensure international visibility for their work as part of a major global event, contributing to Québec’s visibility in the field of digital creativity.
Details of the call for applications
For the 2026 residency, proposed projects must reflect the Biennale’s theme: “Resistance: hacktivism, diversions and artistic tactics in the digital age This link will open in a new window.” This theme explores acts of resistance and subversion in response to contemporary technologies, inviting artists to use artificial intelligence as a tool, material or subject of creation.
Artists with at least two years of practice have until January 29 to apply, for a fall 2026 departure.
